Addictions Counselor/Harbor Light/Chicago

Part-time position.

DEPARTMENT MISSION

To provide each client with positive, professional and quality service; always promoting respect dignity and fairness to each client; while making appropriate referrals which will assist clients in reaching their maximum level of independence.

PROGRAM/CLIENT ENVIRONMENT

The backgrounds of the clients served by The Harbor Light Program will manifest a variety of inappropriate behaviors.  When this occurs, employees are to respond within the context of the treatment environment of the site.  Employee conduct (actions, dress, etc.) and interactions (conversations, written communications, etc.) with clients must also be within the treatment environment of the facility.

OUTCOMES

Counselors will provide supportive services, education, and counseling to clients and their families, who desire assistance with their chemical dependency problems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Chemical dependency services are provided including individual, family, couples and group counseling.
  1. A variety of groups are lead including educational, process, and support groups.
  1. Client’s charts are maintained in an organized order and according to Unit policies and DASA regulations.
  1. Both DASA and Unit policy documentation will be accurately completed within established time tables.
  1. Client treatment plans are written and monitored with the client according to DASA regulations and Unit polices.
  1. Referrals for clients to other Harbor Light units or outside private and public agencies are arranged as appropriate.
  1. The team approach is utilized and strengthened through active communication with all programs within the agency.
  1. Staff meetings are attended and counselor is involved in staff committees as requested.
  1. Records are kept and statistical and other required reports are accurately prepared within specified time requirements.
  1. Work on either of the two shifts of the Unit is agreed to as changes in shift assignment are made periodically by the Unit Coordinator.
  1. All other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This positions reports to the Unit Coordinator.

This individual interacts with a wide range of contacts both within and outside The Salvation Army including clinical staff, staff at substance abuse treatment programs, mental health facilities and Veterans hospitals.  In these contacts they act as a representative of the Army and its mission.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Certified in the State of Illinois as a Certified Addictions Counselor.

A Bachelor’s degree required.

Two years’ experience as a Counselor.

A minimum of one year of sobriety needed.

A demonstrated ability to manage projects, priorities and programs in a constantly changing environment.

COGNITIVE:

Must be able to provide individual counseling group counseling to clients as well as assessment.  Ability to work cooperatively with supervisor, other clinical staff and support staff.

Must have a strong sense of integrity and be able to work with confidential material.

A “hands-on” knowledge of how to effectively work with diversity in the workplace.

Well organized, attentive to time management and able to establish a separation of work and personal boundaries

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is required to do light physical work and must be able to walk up two flights of stairs and lift up to 25 lbs.

In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and PC.

The work environment for this position includes an office environment with a medium noise level.

Must be able to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from mental illness, and have substance abuse problems.
